Ethnography Workshop

Tuesday 15 December 2009

During the festival honouring the 50th anniversary of Fo Angwafo III S.A.N. of Mankon, Langaa hosted a workshop on December 15, 2009 on the ethnography of the northwest region of Cameroon. At this workshop, Professors Michael Rowlands, Jean-Pierre Warnier and Jacqueline Leroy, who have researched Mankon since the 1970s, made presentations that drew extensively on their ethnographies of Mankon and the Bamenda Grassfields. Discussions evolved around material culture, archaeology, language and new directions in research in the region.

Among participants at the workshop were linguistics, anthropologists, historians and environmentalists from Cameroon, the USA and Europe. Of particular relevance to the students and budding researchers in attendance was the emphasis by the presenters on the continuities and discontinuities in the ethnographies of the region, and the importance of an historical approach and transdisciplinarity in research.
