Conceptualising research on mobility in AfricaThursday 30 August 2007 Langaa RPCIP organized 29-30 August 2007 at its premises in Bamenda (Cameroon) a research methodology and proposal writing workshop to conceptualize ’Mobile Africa revisited: a comparative study of the relationship between new communication technologies and social spaces (Chad, Mali, Cameroon, Angola)’. About a dozen researchers from Cameroon, Chad, Mali, and The Netherlands participated as well as local stakeholders from academia, development associations, cultural-religious organizations and ICT companies. Organized close to one of the research sites, the workshop was an occasion for conversations and interviews and that promoted interactions among theory, method and research content. The ‘marginalized’ life and communities to be studied were experienced directly, unlike in such workshops organized in Europe in which ‘marginality’ may remain merely a theoretical concept. The resulting research project, coordinated by Langaa and the African Studies Centre at the University of Leiden in The Netherlands, is funded by WOTRO, a division of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.
